Sinus Lifting

Sinus Lifting (Sinus Lift Operation): Bone Reconstruction in Preparation for Dental Implants

Sinus lifting is a modern surgical method applied to increase insufficient bone volume in dental implant applications in the upper jaw region. This procedure enables sufficient support to be provided for the implants by reconstructing the bone tissue in the lower part of the sinus cavity. The application can be carried out with open or closed techniques according to the patient's oral anatomy and bone structure.

What is Sinus Lifting?

Sinus lifting is an operation aimed at increasing the amount of bone under the sinus, used in the solution of problems such as tooth loss and reduction of bone volume in the upper jawbone (maxilla). Thanks to this procedure, the bone height necessary for the placement of dental implants is provided and it contributes to the implants being long-lasting and stable.

The Importance of Sinus Lifting

  • Implant Suitability: Insufficient bone volume can negatively affect the success of the implant. Sinus lifting provides the bone support necessary for the implants to be placed safely.
  • Aesthetic and Functional Solution: The reconstruction of the bone tissue helps to achieve results close to natural teeth both aesthetically and functionally.
  • Long-Term Success: A correctly applied sinus lifting plays a critical role in the long-term success of the implant treatment.

Sinus Lifting Techniques

Open Sinus Lifting

The open sinus lifting technique is applied by providing direct access to the sinus cavity and placing graft material in the area under the bone. This method;

  • Comprehensive Access: The surgeon carries out the placement and fixation of the graft in a more controlled way by providing wider access to the sinus floor.
  • Wide Bone Augmentation: It is preferred especially in cases of more serious bone volume loss.

Closed Sinus Lifting

Closed sinus lifting is based on the principle of gently raising the sinus floor with a gum incision and minimal surgical intervention. This technique;

  • Minimally Invasive Procedure: By making fewer incisions on the bone, the patient's comfort during the healing process is increased.
  • Precise Application: Bone augmentation is carried out in more controlled and limited areas, thus minimising the risk of damage to the sinus membrane.

Sinus Lifting Operation Process

  1. Examination and Planning:
  • The sinus and bone structure are examined in detail with radiographic imaging (CT, panoramic X-ray).
  • The open or closed sinus lifting technique is determined according to the patient's needs.
  1. Surgical Procedure:
  • Under local anaesthesia, the sinus floor is gently raised in line with the chosen technique.
  • By placing suitable graft material, the aim is to provide bone augmentation.
  1. Healing Process:
  • A certain period (usually 3-6 months) is allowed for the graft to fuse with the existing bone.
  • The healing process is monitored with regular check-ups.
  1. Implant Placement:
  • When the bone structure is sufficiently strengthened, the dental implants are placed safely.
